Central Islip, NY - Alex Grubin (Concordia), a native of Belgrade, Serbia, has been tabbed the 2009 East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year. Teammate Andrey Boldarev was voted the 2009 Rookie of the Year and Concordia Head Coach Neil Tarangoili was selected Coach of the Year.
A two-time Player of the Year recipient, Grubin is currently the No. 1 ranked player in Division II. This season he captured the No. 1 Flight Championship at the Army Invitational and The Scott Satran Memorial Tournament. Grubin defeated the No. 2 nationally ranked player from Armstrong Atlantic State in straight sets, while boasting a 27-1 overall singles record. Grubin also claimed the ECC Singles Flight Championship at the No. 1 spot and teamed up with Richard Malobicky to win the ECC No. 1 Doubles Flight Championship.
Boldarev, a native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, recorded an impressive 20-3 record in singles throughout the season and was ranked No. 24 overall in Division II Doubles with his partner Alex Grubin. He won the No. 2 singles flight at the Army Invitational and was also champion at the No. 3 singles flight at the Scott Satran Memorial Tournament.
Neil Tarangioli of Concordia was named Coach of the Year for the East Coast Conference. Tarangioli led his team to an overall 14-4 record, going undefeated in the conference with a 4-0 record. The Clippers captured their fifth consecutive ECC regular season title, and are currently ranked 13th nationally.
The First Team All-Conference team is comprised of: Boldarev, David Burstein (Queens), Grubin, Richard Malobicky (Concordia), Fabio Minami (Queens) and Sebastian Nieves (Adelphi).
The Second Team All-Conference Team is comprised of: Petr Grishchenko (Dowling), Danilo Hiraoka (Queens), Viktor Kim (Concordia), James Preston (Queens), Henning Ruenz (Concordia) and Jesse Smith (Queens).
