Mercy Falls to Charleston in NCAA Championship

Charleston, W.Va. – Despite two Mavericks recording a shot on goal, the No. 6 seeded Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 3 seeded University of Charleston (WV) in an NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship Second Round matchup on Saturday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium.

The Mavericks (14-4-3) see their season end in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. Mercy recorded their most wins in a season since 1986 and won the program's first ECC Tournament Championship since 2004. The Golden Eagles (18-2-1) have now won eight games in a row.

Seniors Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) and Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) each recorded a shot on goal and senior Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno) had a team-high two shots. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) made four saves to take the loss.

Charleston received two goals from Christos Charalambous and Freddy Tracey. Christopher Allan also scored and Alvaro Dean made two saves to earn the win.

Serrano made a pair of saves in the first 13 minutes of action and Rebolledo-Camus forced Dean to make a save in the 16th minute. Serrano then made his third save of the day in the 26th minute before Eduardo Iranzo hit the crossbar in the 28th minute to keep the game scoreless.

The Golden Eagles finally broke through in the 37th minute when Jesus Cabanas assisted on a Tracey goal to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 at halftime with Charleston holding an 8-1 edge in shots.

The score stayed at 1-0 until the 59th minute when Tracey netted his second of the game following an assist from Adam Burchell to make it 2-0. Just over seven minutes later, the Golden Eagles made it 3-0 when Charalambous scored his first goal of the day in the 66th minute.

Charalambous and Allan scored in the 71st and 75th minutes to give Charleston a 5-0 lead. The Golden Eagles held on for the win and advanced to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

Charleston held a 16-4 edge in shots and Mercy held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
