LIU Post Falls to Charleston in National Quarterfinal

Charleston, W.Va. - The fourth-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team saw its 2017 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to No. 3 University of Charleston in the NCAA Championship quarterfinal game in Charleston, W.Va.

The Pioneers, who closed out the 2017 season with a 18-1-2 record, entered the NCAA Championship Tournament as the top seed in Super Region 1. The Golden Eagles, now 19-1-2, head to the Final Four of the NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament.

The first half featured a tightly-contested matchup between the two sides, but it would be the Golden Eagles who struck first in the final minutes of the half. Gabriel Cabral tallied the go-ahead goal to give the University of Charleston a 1-0 lead.

Even in shots (5-5) in the first half, LIU Post continued to hold its own against an organized Golden Eagles backline and reached the break, down 1-0.

Charleston continued to control possession and went on to double its advantage in the 73rd minute when Cabral assisted in Robin Lapert's goal. Contained through the final 17 minutes, the green and gold failed to find an equalizer and were handed a 2-0 loss, ending their chance at a title.

Pioneer keeper Oliver Hessner Hansen made three saves on nine shots in a match that saw his side get outshot 9-8.
