Washington, D.C. – The University of the
District of Columbia men's soccer team hosted its third annual
Soccer Youth Day on Saturday, September 21st at UDC Athletic Field
before its 1:00 p.m. game vs. NYIT.
Over 30 of the area's youth soccer players came to participate in
the event with several sticking around to watch the Firebirds take
on the Bears. Third-year head coach Matt Thompson and his
assistants Danny Wadeson, Thomas Pool and Derek Biss welcomed the
participants and introduced them to the Firebirds team. Then there
was a skills clinic which focused on passing, receiving,
possession, shooting and short-sided games. The Firebirds players
worked with small groups to teach the young, eager players the
sport's fundamentals.
Following the skill session, there was an open forum for the youth
players and the Firebird players to socialize. The Firebirds signed
autographs and posed for pictures.
"The Youth Day event was a huge success," Thompson said. "The
feedback I got was that the kids thoroughly enjoyed the entire day,
and we certainly had fun putting the event on."
