BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The sixth-ranked C.W. Post men's soccer team, seeded #1 in the East Coast Conference Championships, defeated #4 Queens College 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the semifinal round of the tournament.
The Pioneers improve 10 16-1-1 and advance to Friday's ECC Championship game at 2:30 p.m., hosted by the higher-seeded Pioneers against the #2 seed NYIT Bears, a 2-1 winner over Bridgeport in the other semifinal contest.
Queens ends its season at 7-7-4.
Sophomore forward Cemil Turan (Staten Island, N.Y) accounted for the lone goal of the contest in the 37th minute, as the Pioneer offense caused a defensive deflection and pulled Queens GK Demetrios Touros out of the net. Andreas Olson (Oppeid, Norway) collected the ball and sent a short pass to Turan, who shot directly into the middle of the open net.
The Pioneers made the goal stand for the remainder of the
contest, despite being outshot 16-14 by the Knights. Marco
Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) made five stops in goal, and
Kieran Mercer (Brighton, England) came up with a big defensive save
late in the second half.
The Pioneers held a 9-4 edge in corners. Touros made four stops in goal for the Knights, respectively.
