Adelphi, Bridgeport and Dowling Earn 2008 NSCAA College Team Academic Award

Central Islip, NY- The Dowling College Men's Soccer team and the Adelphi University and University of Bridgeport Women's Soccer teams have earned the 2008 NSCAA College Team Academic Award presented by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

This honor is awarded to college soccer teams who achieve a team grade point average of 3.0 or above.

Adelphi and Bridgeport are two of 261 institutions to receive this award.  The Purple Knights, who posted a 3.09 team grade point average during the 2007-08 academic year, are eight-time recipients of the Team Academic Award. The Panthers, who held a 3.42 team GPA, are one of only 59 schools to earn this award for both their men's and women's team (Adelphi Men's Soccer competes at the DI level).

This year marks the second time in three years that the Golden Lions have received the award.  They are one of 104 men's soccer institutions to garner this award for the 2008 season. Helping the team achieve this goal was Academic All-District 1st Team member Patrick Cunningham, who posted a 3.92 cumulative GPA over 4 years at Dowling.

Based in Kansas City, Kan., the NSCAA is the largest coaches' organization in the United States.  Since its founding in 1941, it has grown to include more than 26,000 members who coach both genders at all levels of the sport.  In addition to a national rankings program for colleges and high schools, NSCAA offers an extensive recognition program that presents nearly 10,000 individual awards every year.
