Central Islip, N.Y. - The LIU Post men’s
basketball team has been selected as the preseason favorite in the
2012-13 season East Coast Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by
the conference’s head coaches. The league’s coaches
also selected a Pioneer, senior guard Tobin Carberry, as the
Preseason Player of the Year.
LIU Post, winners of the past two ECC Men’s Basketball
Championships, received 91 total points and seven first place votes
to take home the top spot in the poll. The Pioneers will have
to make up for the loss of two-time ECC Player of the Year, Stefan
Bonneau, but return three starters and two key reserves from a team
that finished with a 23-6 record in 2011-12 .
Coming off a strong showing in their first season in the ECC,
University of the District of Columbia received two first-place
votes while tallying 89 points to earn the No.2 spot on the
poll. The Firebirds finished the 2011-12 season with a 22-6
record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25
years. Bridgeport rounds out the top three with 79
points. Molloy earned the final first place vote to come in
fourth.
Carberry, an All-Conference First Team member in the 2011-12
campaign, is LIU Post’s top returning scorer. He averaged
17.9 points per game, good for fifth in the conference, and also
topped the 1,000 point mark for his career a season ago. Carberry
is also a solid rebounder from the guard position. He pulled down
171 rebounds and averaged 5.9 per game to rank just outside the
top-ten in the ECC.
