Carberry, Jones, and Waiters Headline Men’s Basketball All-Conference Awards

Central Islip, N.Y. – The men’s basketball coaches in the East Coast Conference have selected Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) of LIU Post as the 2012-13 East Coast Conference Player of the Year. St. Thomas Aquinas guard T.J. Jones (North Stafford, Va.) takes home the ECC Rookie of the Year honor, while University of Bridgeport senior guard Dion Waiters (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been named the ECC Defensive Player of the Year.  

Carberry, a two-time Player of the Week honoree, makes the jump to the top honor in the league this season. Carberry has been a prolific scorer this season, pacing the ECC with an 18.8 points per game average. He scored in double digits in every game on the season and poured in more than 20 on 14 different occasions. His scoring average is also among the national leaders, coming in at 39th in all of Division II. Carberry also ranks in the top five in the ECC in field goals made, three point field goals made, and three point percentage.

Jones put together an impressive freshman campaign for St. Thomas Aquinas. The freshman guard led all first-year players in scoring by pouring in 13.8 points per game. A three-time ECC Rookie of the Week, Jones posted seven 20 point games and 20 double digit scoring performances on the season.

Waiters earns the Defensive Player of the Year honor after leading the all NCAA Divisions in steals per game. In 22 games, Waiters amassed 105 steals for an eye popping 4.77 steals per game, more than half a steal more than his nearest competitor. He also contributed defensively with solid rebounding numbers for a guard, pulling down 5.1 boards per contest.  

Head Coach Charles Marquardt from Molloy has been tabbed Coach of the Year.  Marquardt led the Lions to a program record 17 wins and first winning season since the 1999-2000 campaign. Under Marquardt’s leadership, Molloy also posted a 13-5 mark in conference play, finishing in a three way tie for second place in the ECC and the number four seed in the ECC Championship.
