WASHINGTON, D.C. – Head men's basketball
coach Jeff Ruland and the University of the District of Columbia
men's basketball team was featured on NBC News4 at 5:45 p.m. on
Thursday, January 19th, and a feature story written by Kathy Orton
on senior guard Nigel Munson ran in the Washington Post on Friday,
January 20th.
Hakem Dermish, a member of News4's Evening Team, filmed a personal
feature story of third year head coach Jeff Ruland, a former NBA
All-Star who has revitalized the UDC men's basketball program and
has the Firebirds off to one of their best starts in school history
with a record of 14-2.
Dermish also interviews District of Columbia's dynamic backcourt
duo of senior guards Brandon Herbert (Baltimore, MD –
McDonough HS) and Nigel Munson (Washington, DC – DeMatha HS).
Herbert, who last Saturday eclipsed the 1,000 point milestone for
his career, is ranked 7th in Division II in three-point field goals
per-game with 3.9 and is also ranked 20th in the nation in
free-throw percentage at 89.8. Munson, who needs just 29 points to
also reach the 1,000-point career plateau, is ranked 7th in the
nation for assists per-game with an average of 6.4. Watch the video
here.
Meanwhile, Kathy Orton's story on Nigel Munson offers a detailed
account of the former DeMatha HS superstar point guard's journey
over the past five years, and explains how he landed back in the
nation's capital playing for the Firebirds. View the story here.
