Molloy Defeats Mercy, STAC to Advance to ECC Final

Uniondale, N.Y. – The top-seeded Molloy baseball team won two elimination games to advance to the ECC Final tomorrow. The Lions beat third-seeded Mercy, 6-1, then came back and defeated the fourth-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, 16-4. The maroon and white improved to 34-12.
 
Game One: Molloy 6, Mercy 1

  • The Lions' bats began quickly in the top of the first, redshirt senior Thomas Brady singled home senior Vincent Pecora to give Molloy a 1-0 lead.
  • Graduate student Matt Overton followed Brady with a two-RBI double to extend Molloy's lead to 3-0.
  • Senior Patrick Hoffman brought home Overton with an RBI single to cap the first inning with the maroon and white holding a, 4-0, lead.
  • In the top of the fourth, Brady added his second RBI of the afternoon scoring senior Robby Keane to extend the lead to 5-0.
  • The maroon and white added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, graduate student Peter Theodorellis doubled to bring home Keane pushing Molloy ahead, 6-0.
  • Mercy added a run in the bottom of the frame to come within five, 6-1, but that is as close as they would get, as Molloy held on the win the game, 6-1.
  • Graduate student Mike Andreoli pitched a complete game allowing eight hits, one run, and struck out four. With the win, Andreoli earns his 10th victory of the season which sets a new program record for wins in a season.

 
Game Two: Molloy16, STAC 4

  • The Lions plated three runs in the top of the first. Overton blasted an RBI triple to right field, sophomore Garrett Scavelli hit an RBI single to center field, and junior David Franchi drove in a run with a double to left.
  • Molloy added three more runs in the second to extend the lead to 6-0.  Brady hit a two-RBI single through the left-side, and Overton added an RBI single to left.
  • After STAC scored in the bottom of the second, Keane hit an RBI-single to center field to increase the advantage to 7-1.
  • In the sixth, senior Patrick Hoffman and sophomore Chris Einemann ripped RBI doubles to give the maroon and white a 9-1 lead.
  • Franchi walked with the bases loaded, and Hoffman hit a two-RBI single to left to make it 12-1 in the seventh.
  • After the Spartans tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Molloy used a four-run eighth inning to increase the lead to 16-3. Overton walked with bases full, Franchi hit a two-RBI double, and Hoffman hit an RBI single.
  • STAC added a run in the bottom of the eighth to make the contest, 16-4.
  • Graduate student Billy Wildeman pitched seven innings, gave up three runs, on seven hits, and struck out eight for his eighth win of the season.
