Varela Earns Consensus All-American Status

James Varela of LIU Post, the ECC Pitcher of the Year, has been named a consensus All-American by earning a spot on three different publications' awards list. Varela earned Second Team honors on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings and Division II Conference Commissioner's Assocation (D2CCA) lists and garnered Third Team accolades from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Varela finished with an 11-1 record with a 2.40 earned run average and 116 strikeouts in 101.1 innings pitched in his breakout junior season. He finished first in the ECC in wins, complete games (7), shutouts (3), innings pitched, and strikeouts. His win and complete game totals also ranked fifth in all of Division II, while his strikeout mark comes in at No. 17 in the country. Varela also etched his name into the ECC record book. His strikeout mark is the third highest in league history, his win total is tied for sixth, and his innings number is tied for fifth.

ECC Player of the Year, Giovanni Dingcong was also selected as an Honorable Mention All-American by the NCBWA. Dingcong finished the season with a .355 batting average to go along with 15 homeruns and 55 RBI.
