Queens Baseball, Track and Field Teams Volunteer at Men's Health Urbanathlon

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball, and men’s and women’s track and field teams, recently took part in a rewarding volunteer experience, as members of those squads took time out of a rainy day to lend a hand at the Men’s Health Urbanathlon – which was held at nearby Citi Field. Members of the QC teams assisted in various duties, which included working at hydration stations, assisting at various obstacles along the course, and handing out awards as the participants finished their respective races.

“It was great for me to experience the baseball team displaying leadership and humane qualities,” said Queens head baseball coach, Tom Sowinski. “They did a fantastic job of providing verbal support and encouragement, as well as manning hydration and obstacle stations.”

“I found that the event was a humbling experience,” said sophomore baseball player, Chris Ramanauskas (Staten Island, N.Y.). “It felt good to cheer on the runners and to provide them with water so that they could stay hydrated.”

“Although it was rainy and cold out, volunteering at the Urbanathlon was still a rewarding experience,” said women’s cross country and track and field freshman, Bernadette Gruol (Merrick, N.Y.). “Standing at the finish line handing out medals to the finishers was rewarding because we got to see athletes who were determined to achieve their goal of completing the race.”

“Volunteering at the Urbanathlon was a great experience,” stated men’s field-event specialist, sophomore Vincent Fratto (Farmingdale, N.Y.). “Although it was very cold and raining, all of the athletes were optimistic about the race. This experience will hopefully help to motivate our team even more on those days when the weather conditions are not the greatest.”
