Latavia Jackson Hit's 1,000th Career Point in Firebirds Defeat of the Lions

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team defeated Molloy University, 74-68, Wednesday evening at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex Gymnasium, to sweep the season series. The Firebirds improved to 8-5 in conference play and remains fourth in the standings, while the Lions fell to 3-10.

Latavia Jackson led all scorers with 25 points, going 9-18 from the field, and hitting her 1,000th career point in the process. Jackson became the 7th Firebird in program history to reach this milestone (5th ver to do it completely as a Firebird), and the first since, Tajruba Baldwin-Kollore back in 2016.  Destiny Ryles stuffed the stat sheet posting a double-double off 11 points and 11 assists, while grabbing five steals and five rebounds. Tori Williams and Shanell Haskins each added 10 points, and Williams grabbed a team high eight rebounds.

The Firebirds came out blazing, goingon a 16-0 run and holding the Lions scoreless in the opening five minutes of play. Molloy responded going on a 17-4 run of their own that brough the deficit down to just three points going into the second quarter. 

Trouble came for the Firebirds in the third quarter as they struggled from the field, scoring only 10 points. UDC would head into the fourth quarter down by three. A major rally in the fourth saw the home team outscore the visitors 22-13, to pull off the win.

This marks the Firebirds 13th win of the season, which ties their wins from last season, with three more games to go in the regular season. 

UDC shot at 45.6% from the field and Molloy shot at 47.3%. The Lions were plagued by turnovers (21), and the Firebirds were able to convert 23 points from those turnovers. The visitors also had the edge in rebounds 35-30, but the Firebirds managed to score more points in the paint (30-20).

Next Up, UDC (13-11, 8-5 ECC) heads to N.Y. on Saturday, to face off against Queens College in their final road game of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 3:30 PM.
