Bats Fall Silent as STAC Falls to Franklin Pierce, 2-0

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team continued its four-game southern road trip, falling 2-0 to Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at the Ripken Experience.

STAC slips to 1-2 on the young season, while Franklin Pierce keeps their record perfect at 4-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A fifth inning RBI single by Joseph Pesce scored Jose Savinon from second base to break the stalemate and make it 1-0 Franklin Pierce.
  • Jose Savinon and Ian Battipaglia combined to give the Ravens an all important insurance run in the sixth inning, when both players stole bases, with Battipaglia swiping home and Savinon taking second to double the lead at 2-0.
  • In the ninth inning, STAC attempted to rally, as Andrew Jemison drew a walk and Andrew Guerra singled with one out to give the maroon and gold baserunners at first and second.
  • Unfortunately, Kyle Lagrutta struck out looking and pinch-hitter Christopher Conti flew out to left field to end the game.

STAC PERFORMANCES

  • Andrew Guerra had two hits in four at-bats, including a seventh inning double 
  • Kyle Lagrutta had the Spartans only other hit, a fifth inning single.
  • Andrew Alameda got the start for STAC and allowed two runs on seven hits, while fanning four over seven innings. Alameda took the hard-luck loss to drop to 0-1 on the year.
  • Mateo Reyes was summoned out of the bullpen for the maroon and gold in the eighth inning, pitching a clean inning and striking out one Raven.

FACTS & FIGURES

  • The Spartans posted no runs on three hits, with no errors, while Franklin Pierce earned two runs on seven hits, with no errors.
  • STAC pitchers struck out five Ravens batters, while issuing no walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded seven runners on base. Franklin Pierce left five.
