Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a non-conference home doubleheader against the Molloy University Lions on Friday afternoon, as UB won game one, 5-0, and Molloy came back to earn the split with a 12-2 win in game two. The Purple Knights, winners of eight of their last 10 games, are now 11-12 overall, and Molloy moves to 12-8 on the season.
In the opener, freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) spun her second shutout of the season, as she blanked the Lions on three hits with seven strikeouts to raise her season record to 6-4.
At the plate, Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.) led UB with two hits including a double, plus she drove in a run.
The Purple Knights also got runs batted in from sophomore Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.), freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) and seniors Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) in the game one victory.
In game two, UB led 2-1 heading into the top of the fifth, but Molloy exploded for six runs in the fifth and added five more in the seventh to secure the win.
Gabby Simms and Mya Jones each had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit Purple Knights attack in the nightcap, and junior Grace Derita (Middletown, Conn.) had UB's lone run batted.
Up next, the UB softball team continues non-conference action with a Monday doubleheader in Springfield, Massachusetts versus American International College. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
