Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

EXHILARATING FINISH FOR MEN'S SOCCER RESULTS IN DRAW AGAINST AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team saw their match with American International come down to the final seconds today as an exhilarating finish saw the match end in a 1-1 draw.  The Dolphins end the day 1-2-1 after the tie and the Yellow Jackets are now 0-1-4 on the season.

The first half was filled with scoring opportunities for both sides beginning with an early shot on goal from in close for the Yellow Jackets.  Amari Thompson made the save for the Dolphins, the first of his 7 saves in the match.  Just a few minutes later, the Dolphins had their first big opportunity of the half.  A penalty called against the Yellow Jackets set up Daniel Angulo with a chance to give CSI the early lead.  However, Lucas Morales-Fernandez made a full-extension diving save to keep out the go-ahead goal followed by another stop on the rebound.

It wasn't until the closing minutes of the half that a Dolphins corner kick resulted in an opportunity on the counterattack for AIC that led to the game's first goal.  Manuel Schwarz intercepted a ball of the foot of a Dolphin, found Melle Schevers open, and Schevers delivered a perfect through ball to find Gabriele Valerio for the Yellow Jackets goal.  This sent the game to halftime with the visitors leading 1-0, but the Dolphins responded with a second half surge following the intermission.

The Dolphins had several opportunities early in the second half, but their first goal did not come until the 73rd minute.  A Yellow Jackets giveaway in the CSI attacking third led to the goal scoring chance which began with a pass interception by Leandro Angulo.  Angulo found Raul Naranjo streaking towards the corner and Naranjo sent a perfect cross straight onto the head of Miguel Espinosa.  Espinosa sent the header into the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.

15 minutes later with just three minutes on the clock, Schevers received his second yellow card and was forced out of the match.  Now down a man, the Yellow Jackets quickly delivered a cross onto the head of Schwarz that was sent off of the crossbar.  With 18 seconds remaining in the match, the Dolphins generated one final chance of their own when Alex Morris found Espinosa in the penalty area.  Espinosa dribbled up to a vacated net and scored what appeared to be the game-winner, but the flag had gone up for offsides, ending the game in a 1-1 draw.

The game was a tale of two halves as the Yellow Jackets held the advantage across the board in the first half while the Dolphins got the better of play in the second half.  The saved penalty kick shifted momentum in the direction of the Yellow Jackets, but the Dolphins controlled play for much of the second half.  With the draw, CSI remains unbeaten at home this season.

Men's Soccer will be back at Dolphins Soccer Park on Tuesday when they face the University of Bridgeport at 2 PM.
