Wildcats And Purple Knights Battle To 1-1 Draw

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Daemen University and Saint Michael's College battled to a 1-1 draw in NCAA Division II men's soccer action here today. Both teams are now 1-1-1 on the year.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Daemen appeared headed towards its second-straight win, but the Purple Knights scored with just 33 seconds remaining to earn the tie.
  • The game-winner came following a free kick by SMC near midfield. The kicked sailed into the Daemen box, where SMC's Drew Kull headed in on goal. Daemen netminder Harry Firth (Reading, England) made the point-blank save, but SMC's Jack Andrews got to the rebound and one-timed it into the Daemen net.
  • The game remained scoreless until the 75th minute when Daemen got on the scoreboard following a SMC own goal. Junior Gaëtan François (Limoges, France) took a free kicked for Daemen from 25 yards out, which ended up in the SMC net after a Purple Knight defender headed the ball into his own net while trying to clear it out of play.
  • The Purple Knights had the better scoring chances throughout the contest, including putting a shot off the post in the 73rd minute and having a deflection following a corner kick cleared off the goal line by Daemen midfielder Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.) in the 84th minute.
  • The Purple Knights posted a 21-6 edge in total shots and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts also enjoyed an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Firth finished with six saves for Daemen, while senior Liam Barrett made two saves for the Purple Knights.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked just the second all-time meeting between the two schools. Daemen posted a 3-1 victory over the Purple Knights last year at Karrer Field in Amherst, N.Y.
  • The Wildcats have limited 14 of their last 20 opponents to one goal or less dating back to last season.
