Firebirds Shake Off First Quarter Slump to Secure the 73-63 Victory Over Dolphins

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team picked up their second conference victory of the season, amidst a 73-63 comeback victory over the College of Staten Island, Wednesday evening at the Sports & Recreation Center. The Firebirds improved to 2-1 in conference play, while the Dolphins fell to 1-2.

All seven Firebirds contributed to the teams scoring efforts, with four ending in double-figures. Tori Williams posted a double-double with a season and game high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Destiny Ryles came off the bench to pack the Stat sheet with 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Latavia Jackson and Shanell Haskins rounded out the double digit scoring with 11 and 10 points each.

UDC struggled in the opening minutes to get on the scoreboard, with opponent CSI going on an 11-2 run and taking a six point lead into the next 10 minutes. The home team opened up the lead to as much as 12 but UDC responded with an 11-0 run to not only bring them back, but to take a one point lead into half-time

Both teams went into the final stretch tied at 47. The Firebirds pulled out their best offense in the fourth to score 26 points while holding the Dolphins to 16 to secure the ten point win. 

The Firebirds shot at 40.3% from the field, while the Dolphins shot at 39.1%. They had more points in the paint (36-26) and fastbreak points (12-7).

Next Up, UDC (5-4, 2-1 ECC) is back at home on Saturday, with a non conference match up against Chestnut Hill. The game is slated to go off at 1:00 PM.
