Men's Soccer Keeps Pace in Battle for First Place, with 2-0 Victory Over Staten Island

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team continued its exceptional play within the East Coast Conference on Saturday, claiming a 2-0 shutout victory over the College of Staten Island at Spartan Field.

STAC improves to 7-2-3 overall and a remains a perfect 4-0-1 in the ECC. CSI slips to 2-6-3 and 0-3-2. 

Malik McGregor (2nd) and Kevon Evans (9th) led the charge for the Spartans with a pair of second half goals, while keeper Calle Olle Petter Gunnarsson (W, 7-0-3) helped the maroon and gold earn their third clean sheet of the season by stopping all five shots fired his way.

How it Happened

  • 67th Minute: On a Spartans throw-in, Jalen Moni took possession of the ball and made his way around a Dolphins defender, sending a pass to the foot of teammate Kevon Evans. Evans, shook off another defender and sent a feed to Malik McGregor who sent a soft shot under keeper Amari Thompson and to the back of the net to give STAC a 1-0 lead.
  • 75th Minute: Off of a save on the other end of the field Calle Olle Petter Gunnarsson sent a booming kick to midfield, finding Kevon Evans. Evans shook off two CSI defenders, took three dribbles and fired a rocket from about 30 yard out past Thompson to double the Spartans lead at 2-0.

  • STAC outshot Staten Island 12-8, while the hosts also earned an 9-1 corner kicks advantage over the Dolphins.
  • Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba registered a game-high three shots in the contest.
  • In a feisty contest, the teams combined for 38 fouls in the 90 minute affair.

Race for First Place

St. Thomas Aquinas continues its chase for first place in the East Coast Conference, trailing Mercy University by just one point (14 to 13). Mercy shutout Molloy University, 1-0 on Saturday.

STAC has three ECC games remaining: 10/18 at Queens, 10/21 at Daemen and 10/28 vs. Roberts Wesleyan. Mercy has two ECC games remaining: 10/21 vs. District of Columbia and 10/28 vs. Daemen.
