Down By 10 Points Late In The Third Quarter, UB Women's Basketball Comes Back To Edge Staten Island, 75-74
Purple Knights Open A Season At 2-0 For The First Time Since 2013-14
Staten Island, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team trailed the host College of Staten Island Dolphins, 57-47, with 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but UB came back to outscore the hosts, 28-17, over the remainder of the game, including a 25-17 advantage in the fourth quarter, to earn a slim 75-74 victory to close out the CSI Tip-off Classic. With the win, Bridgeport moves to 2-0 on the young season, and the Dolphins are now 0-2. This is the first time the Purple Knights have opened the season a t 2-0 since the 2013-14 campaign.
For the second straight contest, freshman Amani Melendez (Woodbridge, Va.) led Bridgeport in scoring, as she netted 15 points on Sunday afternoon.
She was joined in double figures by junior Asya Brandon (Hamden, Conn.) with 14 points, and sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored 13 points for the winners.
Senior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led UB on the glass grabbing 10 boards on the day, and she fell just shy of a double-double scoring nine points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will look to go 3-0 in the early going of the 2022-23 season when they head to Springfield, Massachusetts on Wednesday evening to take on the American International College Yellow Jackets.
