Gordillo's Third Minute Goal Results in 1-1 Draw Against Mavericks

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.- the University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team battled with regionally raked and reining ECC Champions, Mercy University, to a 1-1 tie to close out ECC regular season play. With this draw the Firebirds move to 3-1-4 in conference play and is currently in third place in conference standings, while the Mavericks move to 4-0-3 and sits in second.

Santiago Gordillo Martinez scored the Firebirds lone goal on the day and Sergio Becerra made a game high seven saves to hold the Mavericks to just one goal. 

UDC struck early, as a cross from Diego Meza- Baez, found the foot of Gordillo, who found the back of the net, in just the third minute of play. Mercy was able to tie the game 1-1, finding the equalizer in the 44th minute. Neither teams were able to find the back of the net in the seond half, resulting in the 1-1 draw.

The Mavericks outshhot the Firebirds 20-10 and had the advantage in corner kicks, 12-3.

UDC has secured the program's third post-season birth- their second in three years. The Firebirds will await the results of the final conference match ups next week, as they hope to secure the right to host their first ever ECC tournament game. 

Up next, UDC (5-6-5, 3-1-4 ECC) will head to Holy Family next Thursday in a non conference match up, for their regular season finale. The game is slated to begin at 6:00pm.
