Bridgeport, CT-The University of Bridgeport
women's basketball team grabbed a share of the East Coast
Conference regular season title, and the Purple Knights will be the
number one seed in next week's ECC Championship Tournament by
virtue of UB's 72-59 home win over the St. Thomas Aquinas
College Lady Spartans on Sunday afternoon. With the win,
Bridgeport ends the regular season with a 19-8 overall record and
16-5 conference mark which puts the squad in a first place tie with
Molloy College. Bridgeport takes the number one in the
conference tournament by virtue of a 2-1 head-to-head record versus
Molloy. With the loss, STAC wraps up its regular season at
15-12 overall and 11-10 in the ECC.
Bridgeport will next be in action at 12 noon on Saturday March
6, 20010, when the Purple Knights, who have a bye into the ECC
Tournament semifinals, will face the winner of Wednesday
night's game between St. Thomas Aquinas and Dowling
College. Wednesday night's game will be host by Dowling
at 7:00 p.m.
In Sunday's win, senior
Emma Beddome
(Melbourne, Australia) led Bridgeport with 19 points, and she also
grabbed seven rebounds. Beddome was joined in double-figure
scoring by junior
Ana-Maria Kammer (Frankfurt,
Germany) with 15 points.
Senior
Sidney Parsons (Chandler, AZ) added
nine points for the Purple Knights, and classmate
Shannon Malone (Melbourne, Australia) chipped in seven points,
nine assists and two steals.
Leane Urbancik of St. Thomas Aquinas led all
scorers in the game with 17 points.
Free throws played a key part in the UB victory, as Bridgeport
went a stellar 19-of-21 from the line (90.5%). St. Thomas
Aquinas also did well at the foul line hitting 10-of 12 free throws
(83.3%).
