Wildcats Suffer 2-0 Setback To Assumption In Season Opener

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Assumption University scored two first-half goals and held on for a 2-0 victory over Daemen University in NCAA Division II women's soccer action tonight at Dobson Field in downtown Buffalo. It marked the 2023 season opener for both teams.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Assumption opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the game when junior Amaia Astiasaran took a pass from sophomore Haley Brown and fired a shot over Daemen sophomore netminder Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) from 20 yards out.
  • The Greyhounds doubled their lead with just over 14 minutes left in the first half. Senior Kate Carlson lofted a shot from 25 yards out over Schultz. Junior Ashley Smith picked up the assist.
  • The teams combined for 17 shots in the second half, but only six of the shots were on goal, four by Assumption and two by Daemen.
  • Schultz went the distance in goal for the Wildcats and made a career-high seven saves. Freshman Frida Larsson made two saves for the Greyhounds in her collegiate debut.
GAME NOTES
  • Tonight's contest marked just the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The teams battled to a 2-2 tie at Assumption last year.
  • Assumption posted a 17-10 advantage in total shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • Freshman midfielder Magda Carpenter (Lebanon, Conn.) played all 90 minutes in her collegiate debut for Daemen and finished with a team-high four shots.
  • Fellow rookie Tori DiCarlo (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) was also in the starting lineup for Daemen, as was junior transfer Ramone Trentin (São Leopoldo, Brazil).
UP NEXT
Daemen returns to action Sunday (Sept. 3) when it hosts American International College. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Karrer Field on the campus of The Park School in Amherst, N.Y. AIC opened its season with a 2-0 win over D'Youville University tonight.
