Washington, D.C.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team tied the school record for consecutive wins at 16 and moved to 20-2 overall and remained unbeaten in the East Coast Conference at 12-0 with a hard-fought, 89-76, road win over the host University of the District of Columbia Firebirds (10-14, 5-7 ECC) in our Nation's Capital on Saturday afternoon.
16 wins in a row ties the program record set by the Purple Knights just two seasons ago, and Bridgeport has now posted at least 20 wins in a season 11 times during head coach Mike Ruane's 20-year tenure on his team's bench.
Saturday was a back-and-forth affair that saw UB lead by as many as 14 points in the first half and head into the halftime break with a three-point, 40-37 advantage; only to see the host Firebirds race out to an eight-point lead, 52-44, with 15:37 to play.
The Purple Knights would then rally to take a 65-63 lead on a layup by senior D'Vonne Trumbo (Pilesgrove, N.J.) with 9:32 to play, and Bridgeport would never relinquish that lead outscoring the hosts, 24-13, over the remainder of the contest.
Junior Hashem Abbas (Nablus, Palestine) and senior Bakary Camara (Harlem, N.Y.) powered the UB offense on Saturday, as they each reached career highs in scoring, as Abbas tallied 29 points and Camara netted 28 points. They each also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double; number five on the year for Hashem and number six this season for Bakary.
D'Vonne Trumbo also reached double-figure scoring 14 points for the winners, and he dished off a team-high five assists.
Zachary Olukanni led three UDC players in double figures with 24 points.
Up next, the UB men's basketball team will look set a new school record winning streak at 17, when they travel to New York Tech on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Long Island.
