Wildcats Fall To Clarion In Season Opener

CLARION, PA – Playing in their 2023 season opener, Daemen University women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (14-25, 23-25,18-25) to the Clarion Golden Eagles on Thursday evening in the first match of the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament, hosted by Clarion. 

The Daemen duo of freshman Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) and Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) combined for 12 of Daemen's 21 total kills on the day. Clarion's Cassidy Snider led all hitters with 10 kills, while Finley Kearney and Julia Piccolino each finished with nine kills. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Making her Daemen debut, Koerber totaled six kills including four first-set kills. The outside hitter out of Germany finished with a .227 hitting percentage, two aces, and a team-high eight points.
  • Armstrong opened up the season with a six-kill performance and led the Wildcats hitting at a .333 percent clip.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) made her second career start as a Wildcat and finished with five kills on the day.
  • Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) led Daemen with 16 digs on the day.
  • Senior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) totaled12 assists, five digs and 1 block assist. 
  • Clarion's All-American setter London Fuller posted a double-double (assists-digs) totaling 38 assists and 12 digs.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After trading points to open the first set, Clarion went on a 10-0 run. The Golden Eagles held onto the lead throughout the rest of the set, taking the first 25-14.
  • The Wildcats settled in the second. In a back-and-forth set, Clarion took advantage of late Daemen mistakes for a 25-23 edge.
  • Daemen opened up the scoring in the third set, but could not keep up with Clarion's offensive firepower. The Golden Eagles out-hit the Wildcats 15-8 in the set and went on to take the third 25-18.
  • Clarion doubled up Daemen's kills on the day, out-hitting the Wildcats 42-21.
GAME NOTES
  • This marked the fifth meeting between the Wildcats and Golden Eagles. Clarion owned a 4-0 record in the series coming into the match.
  • Daemen was picked first in the East Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll for the second straight season. The Wildcats are victors of two consecutive ECC regular season and ECC Tournaments.
  • The Wildcats open the 2023 season with three straight tournaments, starting with this weekend's Tony Banner Memorial Tournament. Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend (Sept. 8-9) to host the Wildcat Den Classic, then heads to Long Island for the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament (Sept. 15-16). 
UP NEXT
Daemen will play in a doubleheader at the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament on Friday. The Wildcats will look to bounce back from tonight's loss with an 11 AM match against Shippensburg, then take on Fayetteville State on Friday at 3 PM.
