Home Opener Victory! Wildcats Sweep Vulcans In First Match of Wildcat Den Classic

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team made their Lumsden Gymnasium debut on Friday night, sweeping California (PA) 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23) in their first match of the 2023 Wildcat Den Classic Presented By Ellicott Hotels. The Wildcats move to 3-2 on the season, and have won three straight matches. Daemen out-hit the Vulcans 48 to 31, led by senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) who paced all hitters on the day with a season-high 15 kills. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Giraud had her third double-digit kill performance of the season with 15 kills (5.0 kills/set) and just two errors for a .542 hitting percentage. The senior scooped up three digs and attributed two block assists for a match-high 16 points. 
  • The reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week, Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) tallied 12 kills (4.0 kills/set) on 28 attacks for a .286 hitting percentage. She had 10 digs for her third double-double of the season and added one ace on the day. 
  • Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) racked up a season-high 23 of Daemen's 54 total digs. Brundage averaged 7.66 digs per set in the win.
  • Senior middle hitter Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) finished with an eight kill, seven dig performance. Kuliga hit at a .471 clip in the match, while adding one solo block and two assisted blocks for a total of 10 points. 
  • Fifth year outside Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) made her 2023 debut today and tallied six kills, five digs, two assists and a solo block. 
  • Senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) finished with 30 assists (10 assists/set), four digs and two aces in the win. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In a back-and-forth first set, the Wildcats went on a 5-2 run to take the first 25-20 after ratcheting up 16 kills for a .262 hitting percentage. Giraud notched five kills and hit at a .833 clip in the set.
  • Daemen opened the second set on a 10-3 run and lead by as much as 14-5 lead. After a series of aces and Wildcat errors, the Vulcans put together a staunch comeback in the set to bring the game to within three points, 15-12. Daemen went on a 10-7 run from there, complete with three Giraud kills, to take the set, 24-19.
  • The third set was a game of runs. After Cal's 6-1 run to take the lead, Daemen went on a 4-1 run to tie it up at 15. From there, the Vulcans went 5-2 to get to 20 first. The Cats then went 6-1 to take a 23-21 lead.
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen out-hit Cal 48-31 on the day and finished with a .237 hitting percentage, holding the Vulcans to just .155. Using a two setter approach with Masic and Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.), the Wildcats finished with 44 assists compared to Cal's 27. 
  • The Wildcats beat the Vulcans for the first time since September of 2016. Cal owns a 3-2 series record.
UP NEXT
Daemen plays two matches on the final day of the Wildcat Den Classic, first hosting Davis & Elkins at 11 AM and wrapping up the tournament with a 4 PM match against Ohio Dominican at Lumsden Gymnasium.
