Firebirds Dominate in Conference Showdown against the knights

Flushing, N.Y. – The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team defeated the Queen's College Knights 67-43, to secure their second conference victory of the season. The Firebirds were led by freshman guard Latavia Jackson who scored 17 points.

Jackson went 6-10 from the field, 2-3 from the three-point line and a perfect 3-3 at the foul line. This was Jackson's ninth double figure scoring game of the season and her highest scoring game since November. She also had five assists and grabbed four rebounds. Teammate Maya Thomas and Tyra Coombs both contributed double figure numbers with Thomas scoring 13 points and Coombs scoring 10. Thomas also packed the stat sheet grabbing five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The first quarter saw both teams going head to head, but the Firebirds were able to edge out the Knights 16-15. The second quarter, both teams turned up the pressure defensively resulting in only 12 shots taken, apiece. The Firebirds still managed to edge out the Knights going into the half leading 26-22.

The Third quarter is where UDC pulled away outscoring Queens 19-8, going 7-18 from the field. Jackson accounted for eight of those points going 3-4 from the field and 1-2 from behind the arc. Thomas exploded in the last quarter going 2-3 from the three-point line and 3-7 from the field to score 10 out of her 13 points for the night. It was the Firebirds highest scoring quarter of the game with a 58.3 shot percentage from the field. 

UDC (5-13, 2-5 ECC) will host St Thomas Aquinas College, who is currently leading the conference with an undefeated 6-0 record, on Saturday January 25, with a kick off time of 1:00pm.
