STAC Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Lincoln, as Lions Steal Game One on Late Runs

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team wrapped of its ECC Regular Season series with Lincoln University on Saturday, taking three of four contests from the Lions with a twin bill split at Clover Stadium.

Lincoln scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning on four hits and two errors to take game one of the doubleheader, 8-4. STAC fought back in game two to score four-fourth inning runs and held on to win 4-2.

The Spartans moved to 15-14 overall and 9-3 in conference play with the split, while the Lions ran their record to 10-20-1 and 3-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

  • Andrew Jemison's second inning sacrifice fly to left field, scored Sean Lynch to make it 1-0 Spartans.
  • Lincoln tied the score at 1-1 in third, as a successful double steal allowed Bryce Oliver to take home.
  • In the bottom of the stanza, Gregory DiGiaro's RBI sac-fly, brought Kyle Lagrutta to the plate from third base to give STAC back the lead at 2-1.
  • A two out dropped fly ball to right field in the eighth inning off of the bat of Bryce Oliver, scored Josiah Bowles from second base to tie the game up at 2-2, and also opened the flood gates for Lincoln.
  • Another Lions double steal, brought Bryce Oliver to the plate for the second time on the afternoon to give the visitors their first lead of the day, 3-2.
  • Jaden Greenidge's RBI single to centerfield, scored Alex Jones to make it a 4-2 game.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, an Andrew Jemison single through the left side of the infield, plated Kyle DeCresce cut the deficit to just one at 4-3.
  • STAC then tied the game at 4-4, when C.J. Cumbo was caught in a rundown at first base, allowing David Potenza to break for home plate and successfully score.
  • A series of miscues by the Spartans and a bit of good luck by the Lions, saw Lincoln score four times to take an 8-4 lead. First, Jalen Greenidge's RBI single through the left side, following an error and another single, scored pinch runner Drew Darby to make it 5-4.
  • Then, a Bryce Oliver single brought Josh Shepherd around to score to increase the advantage to 6-4.
  • Alex Jones drove in a run of his own with a double to left-centerfield, as Jalen Greenidge scored to put Lincoln up 7-4.
  • The final run of the game came on a throwing error by the STAC third baseman, which put Sheldon Johnson on first and allowed Bryce Oliver to score, making it 8-4.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans were able to get a Nick O'Connor walk and a Sean Lynch double down the left field line. However, with two outs, a strikeout stranded both runners and ended the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

  • St. Thomas Aquinas scored four-fourth inning runs, all with two outs, as Christopher Conti got things started with an RBI single to left field, scoring Billy Minett to make it 1-0.
  • Joseph Scamardella's single to centerfield in the very next at-bat, allowed Conti to make his way to the plate to increase the maroon and gold lead to 2-0.
  • A throwing error by the Lincoln third baseman, allowed Andrew Jemison to reach first base, but it also caused both Scamardella and teammate David Potenza to find their way home to double the Spartans lead at 4-0.
  • Lincoln got on the scoreboard in the fifth, when Josh Shepherd sent a solo shot to the left field bleacher seats to make it 4-1.
  • Shepherd's one-out, bases loaded RBI single to centerfield in the sixth, scored Wesley Hogan to cut the Lions deficit in half at 4-2.
  • A one-two-three seventh inning by STAC reliever Jeremiah Vega, which included a groundout and a pair of fly outs, put the kibosh on any rally plans by the visitors and ended the game.

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • David Potenza went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
  • Sean Lynch (2-for-4, double) and Kyle Lagrutta (2-for-6, double) also recorded multiple hits on the day
  • STAC also received a hit apiece from Billy Minett, Joseph Scamardella, Christopher Conti, Kyle DeCresce, Gregory DiGiaro, Nick O'Connor and Andrew Jemison.
  • Andrew Alameda got the start for Spartans in game one and gave up six hits and four runs (one earned) in seven and two-thirds innings of work. He also walked one and struck out seven. Alameda picked up a no-decision.
  • John Dezago and Bryan Krolikowski were tasked with keeping the game in check for the Spartans out of the bullpen. However, the pair combined to hurl an inning and a third, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned), while walking one Lions batter. Dezago was charged with the loss and moves to 0-2 on the season.
  • Orin Winslow took the ball in game two and pitched six innings, giving up six hits and two runs, while walking three and K'ing four. Winslow got the victory for his efforts and improves to 2-1 on the year.
  • Jeremiah Vega came on in relief for STAC in the seventh inning to earn his first save of the campaign. Vega was perfect in his one inning of work.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans posted 8 runs on 14 hits, with 7 errors, while Lincoln earned 10 runs on 17 hits, with 3 errors in two games.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 11 Lions batters, while issuing 5 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 20 runners on base. Lincoln left 16 in both contests.
