Wildcats Drop Home Opener To Nationally-Ranked Golden Knights

AMHERST, N.Y. – Nationally-ranked Gannon University built a 3-0 halftime lead and went on to post a 4-1 victory over Daemen University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action today at Karrer Field. It marked the 2023 home opener for Daemen, which dropped to 1-2-1 on the year. Gannon, which entered the game ranked No. 9 in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II national poll, remained unbeaten on the year and improved to 5-0-0.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Golden Knights struck just seven minutes into the game, as redshirt senior James Pool took a centering pass from redshirt sophomore Pau Ferrer and scored from 15 yards out.
  • Daemen nearly tied the game three minutes later, as freshman Elijah Douglas (Clarence, N.Y.) broke in on the Gannon goal and sent a shot off the post from 20 yards out.
  • Gannon broke the game open with two goals in the span of two minutes late in the first half. Sophomore Shota Toyama blasted a shot into the upper right corner at 37:11, and freshman Rafa Hyde scored at 39:38 to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
  • Daemen got on the scoreboard 9:23 into the second half. Junior transfer Larry Noel (Nassau, Bahamas) sent a cross from the left flank to the front of the Gannon net, where freshman Fabrizzio Jaramillo (Lynwood, Calif.) one-timed a shot into the lower right corner for his second goal of the year.
  • Gannon closed out the scoring midway through the second half following a goal by senior Benjamin Querling.
  • The Golden Knights finished with an 18-12 edge in total shots and a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal. The visitors also enjoyed an 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Junior transfer Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) went the distance in net for Daemen and made a career-high eight saves. Sophomore Samuel Alarcon played 80 minutes for the Golden Knights and made four saves.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools. Gannon has prevailed in the last five meetings and owns an 8-2 advantage in the series.
  • Jaramillo and Douglas are now tied for the team lead in goals (2).
UP NEXT
Daemen returns to action Saturday (Sept. 16) when it hosts Queens College in the East Coast Conference opener for both teams. Game time is 1:30 p.m. at Karrer Field.
