Wildcats Open Dual Match Play With 8-1 Win Over St. John Fisher

Rubio and Scime Both Record Their 25th Career Singles Win

MENDON, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team opened its 2023-24 dual match schedule with an 8-1 victory over St. John Fisher University this afternoon in a match played at the Mendon Racquet Club. The matched was played using NCAA Division III rules.

Daemen, which opened its season at the Allegheny College Invitational last weekend, is 1-0 on the year, while the host Cardinals dropped to 1-2. It marked the first-ever meeting between Daemen and SJFU in women's tennis.

The Wildcats opened the match by winning all three doubles matches. The Wildcats lost just four games over the three matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) rolled to an 8-0 victory.

Rubio prevailed at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-0) over fellow senior Kathryn Strait, while Scime posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over freshman Maddy Langley at No. 2 singles. Those wins marked the 25th career singles victory for both players. Scime is now 20-8 in her last 28 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season. Sophomore Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) improved to 2-2 in overall singles play this year following a 6-0, 6-0 win over freshman Olivia Rizzo at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) saw her first singles action of the year and posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow sophomore Lilly Renzi. Newcomer Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.), a junior transfer from Medaille University, rallied to pick up her first singles win in a Daemen uniform following a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over freshman Lilly Miller at No. 6 singles.
