Spartans Drop Twin Bill with New Haven, 13-1 & 5-4

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with the University of New Haven on Monday at Clover Stadium, as the Chargers picked up 13-1 and 5-4 victories over the Spartans.

STAC slips to 18-21 overall, while New Haven improves to 25-10 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

  • New Haven opened the scoring with three-first inning runs. First, an Andrew Cain RBI sac-fly to centerfield, scored Andrew Bianco to make it 1-0 UNH.
  • Josh Lester's double, combined with a throwing error by the STAC left fielder, allowed Robert Taylor to make his way home to increase the Chargers lead to 2-0.
  • A Tyler Wells RBI single up the middle, scored Lester to make it a 3-0 game.
  • STAC's lone run came in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of C.J. Cumbo's solo shot to the left field bleachers, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
  • In the fourth inning, Andrew Bianco singled up the middle, with Shaun Callahan coming around to score to make it 4-1 New Haven.
  • Andrew Cain's fifth inning homer to the right field short porch, was the first of four more Charger runs. Matt McIntire then doubled to right-centerfield, scoring Josh Lester to make it 6-1.
  • A walk to Shaun Callahan, combined with a stolen base and STAC error, brought McIntire home to increase the New Haven lead to 7-1.
  • Kenneth Franquiz closed the scoring in the stanza by reaching first base on another STAC miscue, allowed Callahan to make his way to the plate and gave the Chargers a commanding 8-1 lead.
  • Back-to-back New Haven home runs in the sixth inning, by Matt McIntire (2-run) and Shaun Callahan (solo), pushed the visitor's advantage to 11-1.
  • The final runs of game one came in the top of the seventh via Casey Cerruto's 2 RBI single, scoring both Andrew Bianco and Robert Taylor to give New Haven the 13-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

  • The visiting Chargers put themselves on the scoreboard first for a second straight game, as Andrew Bianco's 2-run homer to the left field bleachers made it 2-0 in the second inning.
  • New Haven doubled its lead in the sixth inning when Nick Budzik's RBI double to right-centerfield, scoring Shaun Callahan to make it 3-0, followed by Robert Taylor's bases loaded walk to bring Budzik to the plate and make it a 4-0 game.
  • STAC broke the shutout in the bottom of the frame, when Nick O'Connor's double to right-centerfield, scored Justin Klayman to cut the deficit to 4-1.
  • Cole Maucere's RBI double to right-centerfield in the seventh inning, brought in an all important insurance run for New Haven, as Shaun Callahan scored to make it a 5-1 game.
  • The Spartans put together an impressive comeback attempt in the bottom of the seven. A Joseph Scamardella walk, Andrew Jemison double and Justin Klayman walk loaded the bases with one out.
  • Following the insertion of a pinch runner by STAC and a pitching change by New Haven, Andrew Guerra stroked a single through the right side, bringing home both Scamardella and Jemison to make it 5-3.
  • The very next batter, Gregory DiGiaro then doubled down the left field line to score Alex Celeiro and make it a one-run game at 5-4.
  • Another pitching change and a defensive subsitution in right field by New Haven, along with Michael Zeis entering the game as a pinch runner gave the Spartans runners at second and third with still one out.
  • Nick O'Connor then went down swinging for the second out.
  • Kyle Lagrutta was then called upon to pinch hit for teammate Billy Minnett. A soft groundball by Lagrutta was scooped up by the New Haven third baseman and thrown to first for the final out of the game, giving the Chargers the slim 5-4 victory.

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • C.J. Cumbo went 2-for-2 on the day, with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.
  • STAC also received hits from Nick O'Connor (2 hits, double), Andrew Guerra (2 hits), Gregory DiGiaro (2 hits, double), Kyle Lagrutta (1 hit), Sean Lynch (1 hit), Andrew Jemison (1 hit, double) and Freddy Flugger (1 hit) in the doubleheader.
  • Andrew Alameda got the start for Spartans in game one on Monday and allowed four hits and three runs (2 earned) over two innings, while walking one and striking out one. Alameda was charged with the loss, his second in six decisions.
  • Bryan Krolikowski, Jeremiah Vega and Ryan Callaghan worked out bullpen for the Spartans for the final five innings, and combined to surrender 11 hits and 10 runs (6 earned), while walking two and fanning five.
  • Orin Winslow tossed four innings as the Spartans game two starter, giving up two runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out four. Winslow took the loss and moved to 2-2 on the season.
  • Mateo Reyes and John Dezago were summoned from the bullpen for the final three innings for STAC, allowing seven hits and three runs, while walking three and striking out three.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans posted 5 runs on 12 hits, with 5 errors, while New Haven earned 18 runs on 26 hits, with 1 error.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 13 Chargers batters, while issuing 8 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 17 runners on base. Meanwhile New Haven also left 17 in the contest.
