Spartans Drain 18 Three-Pointers in 41-Point Victory Over Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team drained 18 three-pointers on Saturday afternoon, en route to a 103-62 rout of the College of Staten Island at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center, to remain perfect in East Coast Conference play.

STAC improves to 19-3 overall and 10-0 in the ECC, while CSI falls to 6-14 and 4-6.

Antonio Vendola led the way for the Spartans, recording 18 points, while teammates Jamal Barnes (17 points), Kyle Pulliam (15 points), Ethan Millirons (12 points) and DeVante Jamison (10 points) also recorded double-digit point totals.

STAC shot 47.2 percent from the field (34-72) and 51.4 percent from three (18-35), while CSI shot 39.3 percent (22-56) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eleven Spartans recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the maroon and gold with seven assists on the afternoon.
  • Antonio Vendola made 7 of his 10 field goal attempts, with all four coming from behind the arc, while Jamal Barnes went 5-for-11 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded CSI 38-27, with James Patterson grabbing a game-high eight boards.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 16 steals, with the Dolphins turning the ball over on 24 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Staten Island: Points off Turnovers (29-17), Second Chance Points (16-6), Points in the Paint (24-20), Fastbreak Points (10-5) and Bench Points (43-18).
  • The Spartans hit the century mark in total points for the fifth time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • STAC opened a quick 4-0 lead, as Antonio Vendola and James Patterson got their names on the scoresheet with baskets.
  • An Ethan Millirons trey capped a 6-2 run for the visiting Spartans, and gave them a 10-2 advantage with 15 minutes to play in the first half.
  • Luis Risquez, Kyle Jones, Kyle Pulliam and the aforementioned Vendola put the maroon and gold ahead by two touchdowns (21-7) at the halfway point of the opening stanza.
  • Despite Staten Island battling to try and right the ship, STAC put its foot on the gas pedal and outscored the Dolphins 24-14 in the final 10 minutes of action to lead 45-21 at halftime.
  • Antonio Vendola paced the Spartans offense with 10 first-half points, while Messiah Mallory led all scorers with 11 points for the Dolphins.
  • When the teams returned to the hardwood for second half action, CSI was able to cut the deficit to 20, with seven of the first 10 points to make it 48-28 with 18:41 left to play in the contest.
  • An 18-6 streak by STAC, with Jamal Barnes, DeVante Jamison and Antonio Vendola all hitting threes in a four an a half minute span, increased the visitors lead to 30 (66-36).
  • Three-point baskets continued to fall for the Spartans on almost every other offensive possession down the stretch. Ethan Millirons and Kyle Pulliam joined their teammates in the trey-party.
  • STAC built its largest lead of the game (47 points), while also crossing the century mark to make it 101-54 with a little over two minutes to play.
  • A pair of Lawrence Foreman free throws closed the Spartans scoring, while CSI was able to sink a couple of final shots to make it a 41-point margin of victory for the maroon and gold.
