STAC Women's Tennis Registers 5-2 Victory Over UDC

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team picked up its second straight victory on Monday, taking down the previously undefeated University of the District of Columbia, 5-2 at the recently renovated Riley Family Tennis Courts.

STAC improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 within the East Coast Conference, while UDC falls to 4-1 and 2-1.

The Spartans finally played a match on their home court for the first time since the spring, as weather pushed back the opener in Sparkill on several occasions. In that span, the Riley Family Tennis Courts underwent a major resurfacing project over the summer, including the return to the traditional blue and green color scheme. Additionally, new windscreens and banners were added to the fencing surrounding the courts.

St. Thomas Aquinas began the afternoon by taking two out of three doubles matches, as Jemima Parkinson and Elita Silins took a 6-3 victory at No. 2 to set the tempo. The team of Ebba Rosberg and Samanta Villegas Robles would clinch the all important point for the maroon and gold with a 6-2 triumph at the No. 1 position.

The visiting Firebirds would tie things up at 1-1, before the Spartans picked up two straight victories, with Samanta Villegas Robles winning at No. 4; 7-5 (5), 6-1 and Ebba Rosberg taking a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the #1 position to put UDC on the ropes at 3-1. D.C. then cut the deficit to 3-2, but STAC would clinch the team victory with Elita Silins dispatching her opponent at No. 5 by the score of 6-3, 6-4. Elise Semmartin wrapped things up by also taking her match in the No. 6 slot, 6-2, 6-3.

Ebba Rosberg, Samanta Villegas Robles and Elita Silins all went 2-0 on the day, winning both their singles and doubles matches against the Firebirds.

THE ROCKHILL REPORT

"This match was much closer than the 5-2 outcome", said Head Coach Dan Rockhill. "UDC had us on the ropes for the first half of the match as we lacked the energy and fight it takes to defeat a good team. Thankfully, we found our fight and turned the match."

"Samy, today's MIP, has started to perform very well. She is so much fun to watch when she competes at her current level.

"I am happy for Elise, who took advantage of her opportunity and made herself difficult to beat", commented Rockill. "She made very few unforced errors and produced big shots when needed.

"Hopefully, the team will be very aware, going forward, that we need to compete hard right from the start of every match. We got away with a slow start today but might not be so fortunate the next time."

"I look forward to tomorrow's match to see how we respond versus West Chester", stated Rockhill. "I really like this team. We have a chance to be good but will need the entire team fighting hard and not just a familiar few as college tennis is a team sport."
