Cats Wrap Up Wildcat Den Classic With Wins Over Davis & Elkins and Ohio Dominican

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team swept both matches in the final day of the Wildcat Den Classic, topping Davis & Elkins 3-1 in their first match of the day and capped off the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Ohio Dominican in the tournament finale. Daemen moves to 5-2 with the victories, and a perfect 3-0 in the Wildcat Den Classic.

DAEMEN VS. DAVIS & ELKINS
The Wildcats won their fourth straight match in a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20) decision over the Senators. Eight different Wildcats took place in Daemen's 49 total kills in the match, led by sophomore outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) who totaled 14 kills against the Sens.  Malpica and freshman outside hitter Tori Unverdorben (Portville, N.Y.) each finished with double-doubles in the match.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Making her fifth start of the season, Malpica put together her best game of the season. The 5-foot-8 sophomore cruised to a career-high 14 kills (3.5 kills/set) and a career-high 18-digs (4.5 digs/set), while adding three aces and one block for a match-high 17.5 points.
  • Unverdorben made her first ever Daemen start and posted the first kills of her collegiate career. The freshman finished with 12 kills (3.0 kills/set) for a .143 hitting percentage and added a career-high 16 digs (4.0 digs/set) along with two assisted blocks for 13 points on the day.
  • Junior right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) tallied double-digit kills for the second match this season, posting 10-kills (2.5 kills/set) while hitting at a .333 clip on the day. She added three digs for a total of 10 points.
  • Sophomore setter Brooke Ramsey (Andover, Minn.) made her first start of her Daemen career and totaled 30 assists (10 assists/set) while adding four service aces, three digs, two kills and one solo block in the win.
  • Senior middle Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) played in all four sets for the Wildcats and tallied 7 kills, five digs, two aces and one assisted block.
  • Sophomore Mariangelys Vazquez (Bayamon, P.R.) made her Daemen debut and finished with 18 digs (4.5 digs/set), one ace and one kill.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats started almost exclusively underclassmen against the Senators today. Unverdorben attributed seven of Daemen's 15 first-set kills as the Wildcats took the first 25-21.
  • Daemen held Davis & Elkins to just six kills for a .000 hitting percentage in the second set, while the Wildcats knocked down 13 kills in the set. Malpica totaled five second-set kills in the Cats' 25-19 set victory.
  • The Senators got off to a quick start in the third, getting up 8-4 from the jump. Davis & Elkins lead by as much as 18-9 in the set, taking advantage of nine Daemen errors. From there, the Wildcats went on a 7-2 run to bring the game within three points. The Senators took the third 25-18 after the Wildcats committed eight attack errors.
  • DEC opened the fourth on a 9-5 run, but Daemen quickly turned the set around. Led by offensively by Ryan, Malpica and Kuliga, the Wildcats put together a comeback to take the fourth 25-20 and win the match.
  • Daemen out-killed Davis & Elkins 49 to 34 and finished with a .167 hitting percentage.

DAEMEN VS. OHIO DOMINICAN
The Wildcats capped off the Wildcat Den Classic with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-11) victory over Ohio Dominican on Saturday afternoon. Four Wildcats tallied double-digit kills in the win, with Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) and Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) leading the way tallying 13 kills each.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Senior right side Giraud led the team in kills for the fourth match this season, finishing with 13 kills (3.25 kills/set) and just two errors on 25 attacks for a .440 hitting percentage. She added one solo block and one assisted block and two digs.
  • Freshman phenom outside Koerber put together a stellar performance yet again on Saturday, finishing with her third straight double-double of the season with 13 kills (3.25 kills/set) and 11 digs (2.75 digs/set). Koerber added an ace, a solo block and two assisted blocks for a match-high 16 points.
  • Fifth year outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) posted a double-double in her second match of the year, posting 11 kills and 11 digs with three aces.
  • Junior right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished with 10 kills on 18 attempts for a .278 hitting percentage, while adding an assist and three digs to her stat line.
  • Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) scooped up a season-high 27 digs (6.75 digs/set).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats and Panthers traded points to open the first set, but after tying it up at 6, Daemen went on a 6-1 run to take a four-point lead over ODU. The Wildcats held onto the lead through to the end to win, 25-18. Koerber and Ryan combined for eight of Daemen's 14 first set kills.
  • Daemen hit at a .324 clip in the second set, knocking down 16 kills, 12 of those coming from Koerber and Giraud who each totaled six in the set. The Wildcats won the back-and-forth second set 25-21.
  • Despite being out-hit 13-10, the Panthers took advantage of Daemen's errors in the third and put up some big blocks to take the set 25-19.
  • Daemen dominated the fourth from the very start, taking the set 25-11 after tallying 12 kills for a .423 hitting percentage. Ryan and Burns each tallied three fourth-set kills.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Giselle Giraud was named the Wildcat Den Classic MVP after finishing with 30 kills and just four errors for a .438 hitting percentage through three matches. Charlotte Koerber was named one of the six All-Tournament team awardees after tallying 26 kills and 21 digs over the tournament.  
UP NEXT
The Wildcats will play four matches next weekend at the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament, starting with a pair of Friday matches against Quincy at 10 AM and Wilmington at 4:30 PM in Long Island.
