Spartans Roll Past Mercy 19-7, As Jemison Reaches 200 Career Hits Plateau

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Andrew Jemison reached the 200 career collegiate hits mark, while Kyle Lagrutta recorded three hits in four at-bats and drove in seven runs, as the St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team rolled to 19-7 road victory over Mercy College on Sunday in Westchester County.

STAC improves to 11-13 overall and 5-2 in ECC action, while Mercy falls to 5-21 and 1-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Kyle Lagrutta put the Spartans up 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run shot to left field.
  • A pair of second inning doubles by Andrew Jemison and C.J. Cumbo, plated two runs apiece, as Gregory DiGiaro, Andrew Guerra, David Potenza and Jemison all scored to make it 6-0 STAC.
  • In the fourth inning, a Kyle Lagrutta two-out single to left-centerfield sent both Andrew Jemison and C.J. Cumbo to the plate to increase the maroon and gold advantage to 8-0.
  • Mercy got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. First, Janiel Ramirez's RBI groundout to first base brought Steven Schoen in to score to make it 8-1. Then, an Andrew Alameda wild pitch with runners on second and third, allowed Joseph Gonzalez to trot home to make it an 8-2 game.
  • A Kyle DeCresce RBI sac-fly to centerfield in the fifth, scored Peter DeVito to give STAC a 9-2 lead.
  • STAC took a 10-run lead in the sixth inning via a bases clearing 3 RBI double down the left field line by Gregory DiGiaro with C.J. Cumbo, Kyle Lagrutta and Nick O'Connor all making their way home to make it 12-2.
  • Janiel Ramirez's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for Mercy, brought the margin on the scoreboard to 12-4.
  • The Mavericks scoring continued on a Bobby LeFevre wild pitch that scored Zach Ashline to make it 12-5, followed by and RBI single by Jared Hernandez to plate Frankie Asaro and make it a 12-6 game.
  • Another big Kyle Lagrutta hit gave the Spartans additional runs in the seventh, as Lagrutta's double to left-centerfield cleared the bases once again, with Kyle DeCresce, David Potenza and Sean Lynch all scoring to boost the maroon and gold advantage to nine at 15-6.
  • Andrew Jemison's second hit of the afternoon, this one a double down the left field line in the eighth, scored Kyle DeCresce to make it 16-6.
  • In the very next at-bat, C.J. Cumbo reach first on a throwing error by the third baseman, which also allowed David Potenza to score. STAC held 17-6 lead through seven and a half innings.
  • Mercy got a run back in the bottom of the stanza, as Nolan Giblin reached first on an error by STAC shortstop Andrew Jemison, with Jaden Cabellaro scoring to cut the deficit back to 10, 17-7.
  • The onslaught continued for the Spartans offense in the ninth, as Ryan Appell's pinch-hit single brought Eric Volpi around to score to make it 18-7.
  • Then, Andrew Jemison's milestone hit, an RBI single to left field, scored Freddy Flugger to put the Spartans up 19-7.
  • A 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for STAC reliever Robert Williams, which included a Mavericks groundout, strikeout and fly out, put the contest in the books.
