STAC Drops Fifth Straight, Falling to Dominican 7-4

Pomona, N.Y. - Despite a valiant rally attempt in the ninth inning, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team dropped its fifth straight contest on Wednesday afternoon, falling to Dominican University, 7-4, at Clover Stadium.

STAC slips to 18-22 on the season, while Dominican improves to 12-31 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Dominican pushed across three first inning runs, as a Ty Gilligan 2 RBI double to center field, scored both Davin Keddell-Tuckey and Tyler Richman to make it 2-0.
  • It was then followed by Phil Whitney's 's RBI groundout to first base, which allowed Gilligan to come to the plate to give the Chargers a 3-0 advantage.
  • A Spartans miscue in the second inning by their second baseman, allowed Davin Keddell-Tuckey to reach first, with Joseph Coppola making his way home to give Dominican a 4-0 lead.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas got onto the scoreboard in the third, when Nick O'Connor's sacrifice fly to left field, scored David Potenza to cut the deficit to 4-1.
  • Andrew Guerra's RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning brought home Andrew Jemison to make it a 4-2 game.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Stefano Libio's 2 RBI single to left field, combined with a fielding error by the STAC left fielder, sent both Tyler Richman and Ty Gilligan to the plate to put the Chargers up 6-2.
  • Peter Kiefer brought in Dominican's final run of the contest in the seventh on a double to right-centerfield, with Phil Whitney scoring to make it 7-2.
  • STAC attempted to once again put together a rally in the ninth inning. Following a pair of defensive changes in the outfield for Dominican, Andrew Jemison and Nick O'Connor led things off with back-to-back singles, putting Spartans on first and third base with no one out.
  • Andrew Guerra then helped bring Jemison home with an RBI sac-fly to centerfield to give STAC its third run of the game and make it 7-3.
  • A Kyle Lagrutta pop out to second base gave the host Chargers two outs, with Gregory DiGiaro stepping to the plate.
  • DiGiaro continued the game with an RBI triple to right-centerfield, as Nick O'Connor made his way to the plate to make it a 7-4 game.
  • However, a groundout to the shortstop by Sean Lynch would end the game and give Dominican both the non-conference win and a sweep of the crosstown regular season series.
