HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a James Patterson jumper opened the scoring for the Spartans, CSI put up six straight points to go ahead 6-2.
  • Back and forth scoring between the squads produced a 14-7 advantage for the visitors just before the under 16-minute media timeout.
  • A Dolphins three-pointer expanded their lead to 17-7 and each time STAC would try and cut its deficit to single digits, CSI would hit a clutch shot to push back to a ten-point lead (19-9 and 21-11).
  • The Spartans would battle back, going on a 17-2 run to take a 28-23 lead with just over three minutes to play before halftime.
  • Despite a mini rally by CSI in the final two and half minutes of play, a Vasilis Tolias jumper and a James Patterson free-throw would keep St. Thomas Aquinas College ahead on the scoreboard, 31-27 at the break.
  • James Patterson paced the Spartans offense with 11 first-half points each, while Luis Armas posted 10 points for the Dolphins.
  • Following the intermission, the Dolphins got within one point (31-30) on a good three-pointer, but a 9-2 scoring streak by STAC put them back ahead by eight at 40-32 with 14:05 to play.
  • Midway through the half, the sides would match each other shot for shot, with the Spartans building multiple seven-point advantages (45-38 & 48-41), only to see them be cut to as low as two (50-48) at the eight minute mark.
  • A 16-4 run over the final seven and a half minutes would be final blow that did in the Dolphins. James Patterson (3pts), Kyle Jones (2pts), Kyle Pulliam (2pts), Antonio Vendola (4pts), Jamal Barnes (3pts), and Luis Risquez (2pts) all produced offensively down the stretch to push the STAC lead from two to 14, and close out the contest in favor of the hosts.
