Wildcats Open ECC Championship Defense With Sweep Of Queens

Daemen Runs Conference Winning Streak To 24 Straight

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Daemen University women's volleyball team opened the 2023 East Coast Conference slate with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-23, 25-15) over host Queens College today at Fitzgerald Gymnasium - the Wildcats' 24th consecutive win in a regular season ECC contest. The two-time defending ECC champs have not lost a regular season conference match since Nov. 10, 2019. The Wildcats, who were coming off a 3-1 non-conference win over Southern Connecticut State University last evening, also improved to 9-4 overall this season, while Queens dropped to 6-4 (0-1 ECC). 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Freshman outside hitter Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) continued her stellar rookie season by posting her seventh double-double, finishing with a match-high 18 kills (on a .350 hitting percentage) to go with 11 digs. She added two service aces and accounted for a match-high 20 points. 
  • Senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) also reached double figures in the kill column, finishing with 10.
  • Senior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) also recorded a double-double (33 assists, 11 digs) while senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted a match-high 14 digs. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen dominated the box score, holding definitive advantages in points (57-35), kills (46-27), aces (7-3), assists (44-23) and digs (54-38). The Wildcats tallied at least 12 kills in each set, including 18 in the opener, and held a .290 hitting percentage for the match. 

GAME NOTES
  • Daemen now owns a 15-4 record in the all-time series with Queens. The Wildcats have won nine straight meetings.

The Wildcats go for the weekend sweep tomorrow (Sept. 24) when they visit Molloy University for 12 PM conference match.
