SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 13, 2023) – Powered by three saves from junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw at American International College on Wednesday night at Abdow Field.
The Mavericks (2-1-2) earn their second draw of the season and earn their first tie against the Yellow Jackets (0-1-3) since 2019.
Elvestad made three saves to post his second shutout of the season. Graduate student Phillimon Bédard-Khalid (Miami, Fla./Presbyterian College) had a game-high three shots on goal and senior Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College) and sophomore Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole) both had two shots on goal.
American International was led by Lucas Morales-Fernandez who made a game-high nine saves. Ali Taleb had a team-high two shots on goal.
Mercy forced Morales-Fernandez to make six saves in the first 30 minutes of action and Elvestad made one stop in the 19th minute to keep the game scoreless. The score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.
Elvestad made a key save in the 59th minute on a Taleb breakaway attempt on the left side and stopped another Taleb strong scoring opportunity in the 82nd minute to keep it 0-0.
The Mavericks had their best scoring chance of the game in the 88th minute when Morales-Fernandez made a diving save on a junior Luís Silva (Esposende, Portugal/Knox College) header following a corner kick. The game stayed scoreless for the remainder of the contest, ending the game in a 0-0 draw.
Mercy held a 22-11 edge in shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. AIC held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 16th when they play at D'Youville at 2:30 p.m.
