Douglas and Aguirre Lead Wildcats To 3-1 Win Over Pioneers

CANTON, OHIO. – The Daemen University men's soccer team evened its record at 1-1 on the young season following a 3-1 victory over Malone University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action here today. Malone, which opened its season with a 2-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan Thursday night, is also now 1-1 on the year.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Daemen opened the scoring just five minutes into the game when freshman Elijah Douglas (Clarence, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal. Graduate student Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.) started the scoring chance when he sent a lead pass from midfield to junior Alex Aguirre (Miami, Fla.) on the left flank. Aguirre slid a pass to a streaking Douglas, who got past the Malone netminder and chipped a shot just over the goal line from a tough angle. Aguirre, a transfer from Fulton-Montgomery Community College, collected the assist on the goal.
  • The Wildcats doubled their lead in the 17th minute. A corner kick by sophomore Sujan Rajamohan (Spencerport, N.Y.) was deflected by the Malone goalie and Douglas one-timed the losse ball into the net for his second goal of the game.
  • Malone cut the Daemen lead in half just nine minutes into the second half following a goal by junior Gavin Csiszar.
  • The Pioneers nearly evened the game with seven minutes left, but a redirection of a cross from in tight by freshman Josh Lord went just wide.
  • Douglas nearly netted his third of the game with just under two minutes left, but his shot from along the end line went off the post. Daemen secured the win right after that chance when Aguirre was fouled and then drilled a free kick in from 25 yards out to secure the win.
  • The Poineers outshot the Wildcats 12-3 in the second half and the hosts finished with a 22-7 edge in total shots, but just a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Junior transfer Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) started in goal for the Wildcats and made three saves in his Daemen debut. Freshman Owen Griffin made three saves for the Pioneers.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the 16th all-time meeting between the two former NAIA rivals. Daemen has prevailed in four of the last five meetings, including a 2-1 win in Amherst, N.Y. last year.
  • The Wildcats have limited 13 of their last 19 opponents to one goal or less dating back to last season.
  • All four of Daemen's goals this season have been scored by newcomers. Rookie Fabrizzio Jaramillo (Lynwood, Calif.) scored Daemen's lone goal in a season opening loss to Walsh University Thursday night.
