UDC Women's Lacrosse Defeats Alliance University 15-3; Firebirds Secure First Win Since 2018

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's lacrosse team defeated Alliance University 15-3 to secure their first win of the season, snapping a 40 game losing streak for the program. They also had the second most points scored in a game (15), in program history, the most being 16. 

Four Firebirds found their way onto the scoreboard multiple times, with three of them posting five points. Jada Williams led the way, scoring a game-high five goals on six shots, while also forcing two turnovers and winning four draw controls. Michelle Mitchell scored four goals while picking up five ground balls, and Alejandra Lainez-Rodriguez and Tamaya Edward each added three goals. Lainez-Rodriguez also picked up a team-high six ground balls and two assists. Freshamn Goalkeeper, Natakie Perkins also made four saves, holding the Alliance offense to just three goals on the day. 

While it was Alliance that made their way onto the scoreboard first, just 15 seconds in, the rest of the quarter was all Firebirds. Lainez-Rodriguez evened the score with a free position shot a little over a minute later and Williams went back-to-back, scoring her first two goals of the season, and her first as a Firebird. 

UDC would take a 10-1 lead into the half, after scoring a game high six goals in the second quarter with Mitchell, Williams and Edward each scoring two. 

Coming off the break, the Alliance defense was able to hold the Firebirds offense to just two goals and scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to bring the score to 12-2 in favor of UDC. The visiting Firebirds were able to outscore the home team 3-1 over the final few minutes of the game, securing their first win of the season.

UDC was able to clear the ball 18-21 attempts and picked up 22 ground balls compared to Alliance' 11. AU won more draw controls (13-8) but turned the ball over 22 times, compared to UDC's 13.

This marks the programs first win under Head Coach Ruffin and the first win for the Firebirds since the 2018 season.

Uo Next, UDC (1-1, 0-0 ECC) will head back to N.Y. on Saturday to face off against CACC member Dominican University. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
