Men’s Soccer Edged at Holy Family, 1-0

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fought tooth and nail with the Tigers of Holy Family Tuesday evening, but ultimately fell, 1-0, at Tiger Field. Molloy moves to 1-3-1 on the campaign, while Holy Family improves to 2-1-1.
 
How it Happened
  • The home team started the contest with a pair of shots. One that was blocked and the second was saved by sophomore John Takach in the seventh minute.
  • After being awarded a corner in the 11th minute, Holy Family converted the chance with a goal to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lions looked to quickly answer a minute later when junior Ollie Murch created a chance, but his shot was sent high.
  • The cardinal and white added its first shot on goal in the 24th minute. Freshman Steph Maurice found space, but his shot was saved by Holy Family goalkeeper Luke Shank.
  • Senior Ryan Dobson had his chance to knot the contest at one 13 minutes later, but his shot was also saved.
  • The Tigers tried to extend its lead just before halftime, but Takach made a key save to keep the game at 1-0 heading into the break.
  • The opening 20 minutes of the second stanza was defensively stout, as neither team allowed a shot on target.
  • In the 68th minute, Holy Family looked for its two-goal cushion, but graduate student Dennis Mejia who checked in after halftime rejected the chance.
  • Molloy had chances in the 77th and 79th minute. Senior Jonas Jacobsen put his shot over the crossbar and junior Sean Salgueiro sent his shot wide left.
  • Holy Family would not allow the Lions to generate another scoring chance and would go on to win the contest, 1-0.
Top Performances
  • Dobson and Maurice tallied a shot on goal.
  • In goal, Mejia made three saves and Takach made two saves.
Up Next
Molloy will open conference play Saturday (Sept. 16) as they welcome Saint Thomas Aquinas to Rockville Centre. The contest is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
