Fernandes Scores Game-Winning Goal in 53rd Minute as Men's Soccer Earns 1-0 Win Over Southern Connecticut State

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2023) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute from senior Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College) and four saves from junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-1-1) remain unbeaten at home and defeat the Owls (1-1-1) for the first time since 2021.

Fernandes scored his first goal of the season and Elvestad made four saves to post his first shutout victory of the season.

Southern Connecticut State was led by Umberto Catale who had a team-high three shots. Devin Juan made one save to take the loss.

Elvestad made a save in the 20th minute to keep the game scoreless. That would be the only shot on goal of the half for either team as the teams headed into halftime scoreless.

The score remained 0-0 until the 53rd minute when Fernandes fired a shot past Juan into the lower right corner of the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

Junior Joey Dos Santos (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) came up with a team save soon after the Mavericks scored to keep Mercy ahead, 1-0.

Elvestad made three saves in the final 15 minutes of action to preserve the shutout and give Mercy the 1-0 win.

Southern Connecticut State held a 10-8 edge in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 2-2.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 13th when they play at American International at 7 p.m.
