Firebirds Top Regionally Ranked Conference Foe Queens College

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team picked up three conference points after defeating regionally ranked opponent Queens College, Saturday afternoon. The Firebirds improved to 2-1-2 in conference play, while the Knights fell to 2-2.

Freshman midfielder Isaiah Daniel and Junior forward Santiago Gordillo Martinez were responsible for UDC's two goals. Goalkeeper Sergio Becerra made five saves to hold the Knight's offense to just one goal on the day. 

The Firebirds found themselves down 0-1, 11 minutes into the first half, after QC player Adolfo Paquet buried a penalty kick into the back of the net. Twelve minutes later, a kick from Jovani Orellana into the box, was tapped by Gordillo Martinez and shot off the head of Daniel, straigt to the back of the net to tie the game 1-1.

In the 35th minute, Vasco Irazola lifted the ball into the box which was headed by Gordillo Martinez out to the left of the box. Anthony Del Cid Gonzalez choralled it back into the box and Gordillo Martinez dived thrugh two defenders to head the ball straight past the goalkeeper into the back of the net. This goal turned out to be the game winner as Queens was unable to answer the Firebirds back-to-back goals.

UDC had the edge in shots 14-12 and was tied with QC 5-5 in corner shots taken. 

Up next, UDC (4-5-3, 2-1-1 ECC) will host Lock Haven University in a non conference match up next Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm.
