Wildcats Fall To Yellow Jackets In 2023 Home Opener

AMHERST, N.Y. – American International College remained unbeaten on the year following a 2-1 victory over Daemen University in NCAA Division II women's soccer action today at Karrer Field. Assumption, which opened the year with a 2-0 win at D'Youville University Friday night, improved to 2-0-0, while Daemen dropped to 0-2-0.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • AIC opened the scoring 22 minutes into the game when junior Cameron Wilbur headed home a corner kick by graduate student Hannah Storozuk.
  • Daemen even the score with just under seven minutes left in the first half following a defensive mistake by the Yellow Jackets. Junior Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) pounced a a back pass that was misplayed by the AIC goaltender and one-time a shot into the open AIC net.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored what would prove to be the game-winner with just 2:32 left before intermission. Junior Charlotte Bernard collected a loose ball following a scramble in the Daemen box and slipped a shot into the lower left corner.
  • Daemen managed five shots on goal in the second half but could not net the equalizer.
  • Senior Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) had a great chance to even the score with 12 minutes left, but her shot from 20 yards out was turned away with a diving save.
  • AIC posted a 26-14 edge in total shots, but only a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Sophomore Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) went the distance in goal for the Wildcats and equaled her career-high with seven saves. Freshman Sara Avery played the first half in net for AIC and made two saves. Junior Tia Kelk played the second half and stopped five shots.
GAME NOTES
  • Today contest marked the first meeting between the two schools.
  • Today's tally was the 14th career goal for Diaz.
  • Freshman midfielder Magda Carpenter (Lebanon, Conn.) finished tied for the team lead in shots (3) with fifth-year senior Tatyana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.). Scalisi blasted shot from 25 yards off the crossbar midway through the first half.
UP NEXT
Daemen is idle until Sept. 12 when it travels to Albany, N.Y. to face nationally-ranked Saint Rose in a non-conference game.
