Thompson Scores Game Winner in Firebirds Comeback Victory

GERMANTOWN, MD- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team secured their first home victory of the season, after a comeback win over Dominican University Wednesday afternoon at the Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium.

Three different Firebirds scored a goal en route to a comeback from an 0-2 deficit early in the first half. Mustafa Tahir netted his first goal as a Firebird, to put UDC on the board, Axel Gamez scored the equalizer and Liam Thompson scored his first collegiate goal, which was also the game-winner.

The visiting Chargers opened with a bang, scoring two early first half goals on the Firebirds. Tahir managed to stop the bleeding, scoring a goal in the 36th minute to cut the deficit to a score of 1-2 going into half-time.

The second half was a different story, as UDC controlled the ball majority of the game, taking a total of 15 shots compared to the Chargers two. Gamez scored the equalizer in the 59th minute and after a series of close shots on goal from multiple Firebirds, a pass from Zachary Parker to Thompson in the 80th minute resulted in the game winner.

Next up, UDC (2-2-1) will open conference play this Saturday, traveling to Roberts Weslyan University. The game is set to start at 2:30 PM.
