Second Half Goals Lift Cavaliers Past Wildcats

CANTON, OHIO. – Walsh University scored twice in the span of 17 minutes midway through the second half to post a 2-1 victory over Daemen University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action here tonight. It marked the 2023 season opener for both teams.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The first half saw limited scoring chances at both ends of the field and Daemen broke the scoreless tie in the 38-minute. Freshman Fabrizzio Jaramillo (Lynnwood, Calif.) collected a ball inside the Walsh box and slid a shot into the lower right corner for his first collegiate goal.
  • Walsh even the score in the 60th minute when freshman Ben Clark scored off a corner kick by graduate student Ian Quinn.
  • The Cavaliers netted the game-winner in the 77th minute when senior Dominic O'Connor scored off a pass from Quinn.
  • Walsh held the Wildcats without a shot over the final 13 minutes to secure the win.
  • The Cavaliers posted a 12-7 edge in total shots and a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Senior Harry Firth (Reading, England) went the distance in goal for the Wildcats and made four saves. Sophomore Charlie Walker made four saves for the host Cavaliers.
GAME NOTES
  • Tonight's contest marked the 19th all-time meeting between the two former NAIA rivals. Walsh has prevailed in 17 of the 19 meetings. The team's battled to a 1-1 tie last year at Karrer Field in Amherst, N.Y. The last four games between the two schools have either ended in a tie or have been decided by one goal.
UP NEXT
Daemen remains in Ohio and will play Malone University Saturday at 1 p.m. Malone opened its 2023 season with a 2-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan University tonight.
