#21 Spartans Score Early and Often in 108-70 Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan

Sparkill, N.Y. - A 60-point first half by the #21 NABC ranked St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team allowed the maroon and gold to cruise to a 108-70 conference victory over Roberts Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon at Aquinas Hall.

STAC improves to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in ECC play, while Roberts Wesleyan slips to 5-8 and 3-2.

James Patterson led the Spartans with 25 points, while teammates Jamal Barnes (17 points), DeVante Jamison (11 points), Kyle Jones (10 points) and Luis Risquez (10 points) also scored in double-figures.

STAC shot 48.1 percent from the field (38-79), while Roberts Wesleyan shot 40.7 percent (24-59) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ten Spartans recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the maroon and gold with five assists on the day.
  • James Patterson made 10 of his 13 field goal attempts, while Jamal Barnes went 5-for-9 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded Roberts Wesleyan 45-34, with Kyle Jones and Luis Risquez both grabbing a game-high seven boards apiece.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 10 steals, with the Redhawks turning the ball over on 24 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Roberts Wesleyan: Points off Turnovers (32-6), Second Chance Points (19-9), Points in the Paint (46-26), Fastbreak Points (2-0) and Bench Points (42-40).
  • The game featured one tie and no lead changes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • An early 2-2 stalemate between the teams, quickly became an 11-2 advantage in favor of the Spartans, as DeVante Jamison, Antonio Vendola and James Patterson led a 9-0 run, which forced the visitors to call a timeout.
  • The Redhawks battled back and got within three on mutiple occasions over the next four minutes of action.
  • Another streak by STAC, this time 12-2, brought their lead back to double digits (13) at 31-18 with a little over nine minutes to play in the first half.
  • A monster dunk by James Patterson put the Spartans up by 28, 50-22 with 4:32 left in the stanza.
  • Antonio Vendola, Kyle Jones, James Patterson and Jordan Green combined to score the final 10 points of the half to give STAC a commanding 60-29 advantage at the break.
  • James Patterson led all scorers with 15 first-half points, while Rian Carter paced the Redhawks offense with six points.
  • When the teams return to the hardwood for second half action, STAC scored the first five points of the new frame to increase their lead to 36 (65-29).
  • Despite Roberts Wesleyan continuing to make their shots, St. Thomas Aquinas matched and exceeded the scoring output of the visitors, building its largest lead of the game (45 points) on an Ethan Milliorns trey to hold a 99-54 advantage with seven and a half minutes remaining in regulation.
  • Moments later, STAC hit the 100-point mark for the second time this season, when a Kyle Jones three sailed through the net to make it 102-59.
  • In the final six minutes of action, the Redhawks outscored the Spartans 11-6, but it would only put a minor dent in their deficit as STAC wrapped things up on a no-doubter, winning by 38 points.
