Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Downed at East Region Clash

Springfield, Mass. - The volleyball team returned to action this afternoon at the East Region Clash, hosted by American International College at the Henry A. Butova Gymnasium. The Lions fell to both host AIC (3-5) and Bentley University (6-3) in three sets to sit at 2-6 on the season.

How it Happened
  • The home team opened the contest on a 5-1 run, but the Lions would eventually chip away at the lead and not allow consecutive points from the Yellow Jackets, tying the game at 10. 
  • Kills from graduate student Mariana Donado Yepes put Molloy in front, 13-12.
  • The score would be tied four times, including at 18-18 following a block from seniors Kiarra Roth and Colleen Moulder
  • AIC would take five of the next six points to take a 23-19 lead en route to the set victory.
  • The Yellow Jackets led by as much as 21-7 in the second set, but the cardinal and white refused to go down easy.
  • Three kills from junior Roberta Monticelli and three kills from sophomore Aria Miller helped Molloy come within four, 24-20 before AIC would score the final point needed for the set.
  • The home team opened the final set with a sizable eight-point run that proved to be too much for the Lions to come back from. 
Top Performances
  • Moulder led the Lions with seven kills and three blocks. 
  • Monticelli and junior Alex Brown both put up six kills with Brown adding a block.
  • Roth's 18 digs led defensively while sophomore Angelina Scichilone (13) and Donado Yepes (11) both joined her in double digits. 
  • Donado Yepes' 25 assist gave her the double-double. 
  • Roth and Miller each added two assists.

How it Happened
  • Molloy started the contest off strong with a kill and block from Moulder and a kill each from Monticelli and Roth, leading 6-2.
  • The Falcons responded by taking the next seven points to lead, 9-6.
  • The Lions would come within three, but were unable to threaten further.
  • The offense would struggle, combining for just 12 kills through the next two sets to give Bentley the victory. 
Top Performances
  • Roth led with seven kills and two aces while adding nine digs.
  • Moulder had three blocks, four kills, two digs, and an assist.
  • Monticelli tallied six kills and four digs.
  • Freshman Hope Carolan led with 10 digs while adding three assists.
  • Donado Yepes had 16 assists and five digs.

Molloy returns to action in Springfield tomorrow in the second day of the East Region Clash, taking on Saint Anselm College at 11:00 a.m. and Holy Family University at 2:00 p.m.
