Firebirds Fall to Spartans 53-62 on the Road

SPARKHILL, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to St Thomas Aquinas College 53-62, on the road, Wednesday evening at Aquinas Hall. The Firebirds fell to 5-4 in league play while the Spartans improved to 7-2.

Tori Williams the Firebirds with team highs of 14 points and nine rebounds. Shanell Haskins came off the bench to add 12 points. Halia Ellis dropped nine points and Destiny Ryles, Aiyana Ellis and Janiya Smith each added six points.

The Firebirds struggled in the paint in the first quarter going only 4-16 from the field.  Their saving grace from their downtown shooting going 6-19, to keep them in the game 25-29 going into the half . UDC opened up the third quarter going on a run that would give them a 5 point lead, that was unfortunately short lived. The fourth quarter saw STAC slowly begin to pull away, leading by as much as 12 points. The firebirds walked away with the lough 53-62 loss.

The Firebirds struggled from the field shooting at 26.8% from the field while the Spartans shot at 38.5%. UDC was also outrebounded by the Spartan 39-49 but managed to force more turnovers 16-6 and convert more points off turnovers 13-6.

Next Up, UDC (10-10, 5-4 ECC) heads back home as they prepare to host Mercy College on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
